The Angel Bracelet

To say that this week has been the most bizarre week of my entire year would be an understatement! First off I really thought I had lost my mind this past week; I went a little bit stupid without electricity! So much so that I vouched to go and visit Thomas Edison’s grave once my power came back on and to my surprise I found out that his grave is somewhere in New Jersey, this whole thing cannot be a coincidence! So when the weather is better I would need to go and pay my respect because as of Monday my electricity has been back on!

On Sunday night I went to bed after putting on as much clothing on as I could and snuggled under my two heavy-duty duvets! As I was tossing and turning trying to get warm enough so I would fall asleep I heard a weird noise! I think it sounded weird because I hadn’t heard that noise in nearly 10 days. The air conditioning was making noises; I jumped out of bed in a daze and turned the lights on! OH MY GOD!! POWER! I went in to the living room turned my TV and computer on and everything was working, you should have seen me I was standing in the middle of the room flooded by artificial light and I was completely gob smacked, my mouth opening and closing like a fish! Then five minutes later the power went out again and I was ready to burst out crying but I thought that would be silly so I went back to bed! And then two minutes later the power came back up again and then went out again, and the pattern went on for a couple of hours but I am so so so glad that the power is back on and everything feels so normal! To top off such an amazing day I got a call to say that I was hired at this place that I had applied for a job and that I could start the next day!

So I think I have been like somewhat of a headless chicken this past week with all the different problems with what happened here in New Jersey and I have been trying to adapt to this new schedule that I am on so I feel I have really neglected my blog.but we will blame sandy for that!

I made this piece a month or so ago. I had been drawing a lot of patterns that resembled wings and I had been trying to experiment with different curves and shapes. Also I had been meaning to work with these hex cut type beads that I have had for a really long time!

Since the shape reminded me of wings I went with grey/clear palette although one of the hex cut beads seems to have a purple tint to it but I still think the colours work together well.

I have also been wanting to do a full row of bugle beads around a piece but I haven’t been able to get them to sit right. Every time I tried I got really weird gaps and I don’t like gaps but I was determined to try it out and maybe because I used a smaller size bugle beads (3mm in this case) the gaps were not too bad and I could get the bugles as close together as possible while following a tight curve around the centre cabochon. I also used the same bugle beads for the edge finish to give the bracelet more of an angelic/feather/ ray of light type of feel in keeping with the theme I was going for.

It feels great being back on the blog and being able to post about beading again and I hope you have enjoyed this piece! I also hope that it would stop snowing now, I have work tomorrow and I really don’t enjoy driving in the snow! Good night everyone!

Emancipation

I have been so tired lately and I blame the squirrels!!

So a week or so ago I started hearing these really weird sound echoing all around me which turned out to be some squirrels that have made themselves feel right at home just on my bedroom ceiling and are partying up there all night long, every night. good for them but not good for me!!

My eyes are closing as I am writing this but I decided to write a small post for two reasons: first, I don’t really like to ignore the blog specially now since it’s a brand new blog and it’s a baby and needs more attention and secondly I was told off by my mom for not having updated the blog for 3 days!! Now I don’t know about you but I loathe disappointing my mom more than anyone else!

This is a small brooch I worked on a while ago when I had absolutely no idea what to do. I kept wanting to come up with elaborate, grand designs and I couldn’t get a solid idea going so I went to the other end of the spectrum by going completely simple.

And apparently when I go simple I go really simple. I used an image from Natalie Shau called “ Released Time” and grey and red painting and hence the grey and red beadwork.the painting is breathtaking and I really suggest you visit her website to get a better sense of how beautiful and detailed her work is

The design as you see is as simple as it gets, the only new thing about this piece is the edge finish in which I used drop beads which give a fun effect and I wonder why I haven’t used this type of finishing on any other piece since! Hope you guys enjoyed this piece even though it’s rather plain and simple!!

Blue Goldstone Earrings

True to form I managed to waste my whole Saturday, I had so many plans. I think it’s because I heard back from one of the jobs I had interviewed for and I was told that I was overqualified which is the most bizarre explanation for not giving someone a job ever in my opinion! After reading the email in a half asleep state this morning I decided to take a portion of the day and wallow. I mean no one should start their Saturday with this type of email. So I moped about for a while going through the 7 stages of grief but apparently It took more than a few hours to get over the news because I suddenly looked at the clock and its now nearly 1:30 in the morning. Nooooo!!

I might have wasted my whole day but I am not going to waste my night so I have decided to write up a quick post.

A while back I shared pictures of a piece I had made which I had yet to finish. You can see the original post here.

I finally decided it was time to do something with the piece and even though I had originally made the pieces for gloves, in the end I decided it would be best to make them into earrings.

I used crafters ultimate glue to glue the piece to Ultrasuede making sure to glue a couple of millimeters away from the edge. This is so that the needle could go through the backing and the Ultrasuede easier but if you decide to do this and get glue to the edge don’t worry the needle still goes through, it might need a little bit more coaxing at times but it will go through,

I was thinking of doing a clean edge around the piece but since I had used bigger beads in my last row of beading I thought that doing a clean edge might look a little bit weird so I opted to do a sunshine edge and do a basic picot edge to finish the piece off.

Maleficent Bracelet

Disney sure knows how to do a villain properly, especially female villains! They are all so beautiful, regal and well villainy!!!

I love maleficent and out of the older Disney movies sleeping beauty is my favorite , my all time favorite is the little mermaid but that’s a different story! So I was very surprised to read that the sleeping beauty was one of the least successful Disney movies!

When I first saw the series of work done by Tom Bagshaw inspired by the Disney villains I was instantly in love. The painting inspired by Maleficent is called “Evil Intent” and I really wanted to do something special with it and since my first exercise with a fully beaded bracelet went really well I decided that this was going to be another bracelet piece.

I glued on my cabochon onto black Ultrasuede that I had roughly stitched to Lacy’s stiff stuff and started to do the bezel work around the piece. I work really quickly when I feel secure in my colour choices and the pieces that I do that are darker tend to go a lot smoother and faster since I tend to second guess my choices less when it comes to using darker colours.

I was sure of a few things in this piece: I really wanted to use crystal chains, and I really wanted to use these new nail head beads that I had just ordered off Etsy.

After I was done with the beading around the focal point I went on a little scavenger hunt for the next pieces. After laying down a couple of different pieces onto the piece I finally went with two large round cabochon and two smaller blue goldstone cabochons.

Once all the beading was done I checked to see if the piece would fit around my wrist. But it was way too small. I didn’t want to add anymore stones cause I thought it would an overkill to have yet another type of stone added to the work and I didn’t have anything that was smaller that the blue goldstone cabochon that would go with the piece. So after a little bit of thought I went with more of the nail heads to get the length I needed for the piece to fit my wrist.

Once the piece was done I glued it on to another piece of Ultrasuede and cleaned up the edges by doing a sunshine edge. I have to say that sewing through the 3 layers of Ultrasuede and Lacy’s stiff stuff really does a number on the fingertips! To finish off I went with a simple tube bar clasp for closure.

I have to say that I have done a couple of pieces that I like but this is the one piece I have done up to now that I am really proud of. I had this bracelet on when I had to go for a doctor’s visit and I found it intriguing that one of the nurses that worked there though the piece was scary. Now I don’t see the piece as anything remotely scary as she put it but she was wearing hello kitty scrubs so I am guessing that out sensibilities fall on different ends of the spectrum. So what do you guys think ,is this piece scary!!!!?

Crystal and Turquoise Bracelet Finished

turquoise and crystal bracelet

I was finally able to finish the large turquoise bracelet I was working on.and here is how the piece turned out:

Crystal and Turquoise Bracelet

Crystal and Turquoise Bracelet

The beading part went by quite quickly. After finishing the bezel and adding the crystal chain I added the two smaller turquoise beads to the side of the piece and a larger crystal cabochon in the middle and started filling the rest out with different types of beads I had pulled from my stash. I tried to incorporate some of beads that I hadn’t used before without going too overboard.

Crystal and Turquoise Bracelet

Crystal and Turquoise Bracelet

The part that took the longest for me was figuring out the fastening. I knew I wanted to make the beaded part big enough to cover only half of the wrist so that I could use chains to make up the rest of the bracelet. I bought a couple of different types of silver chains and decided on using the thinnest one I had purchased.

Crystal and Turquoise Bracelet

I haven’t had any jewelry making training and I am just trying to figure things out as I go along so it takes me a little while to come up with something that I feel I am going to be happy with.

Crystal and Turquoise Bracelet

Crystal and Turquoise Bracelet

For the clasp I had wanted to use a lobster clasp with a chain extender on the other side so that the bracelet would be adjustable but then I would have had to cut the chains really short which would have taken from the effect that the chains were making so I decided against the lobster clasp and went with a toggle clasp instead which made the bracelet tight enough that it would sit right on the wrist.

A Desolate Brooch!

desolation brooch

Today my camera decided to give me attitude. No matter which way I turned it or how I adjusted the settings it did not want to take a good picture of this brooch and I am sorry the quality of these pictures are not that great.

desolation brooch

I work better with darker colours as I have mentioned before. I find that I am less critical of my work when I used darker colours and that is probably because my brain has been better trained to work with darker colours. But I don’t want all the pieces I make to look the same so I have been experimenting more and more with the silhouettes I was looking at ornate mirrors when I came up with the design for this brooch. Also the curves on the top part of the brooch go hand in hand with the design on the face of the girl in the picture.

The main image in this brooch is from a piece called “Desolation” by Natalie Shau. I am not sure what medium she has used for this piece. The woman looks too realistic to be a painting but there are some artists that you can’t really tell if their work is a painting or a photograph when you look at it. I am not sure if this piece is a photo ,a painting or is mixed media,  but the detail in it is amazing , but it unfortunately doesn’t come through in my pictures but you can see the actual picture here:  http://natalieshau.carbonmade.com/projects/3192174#22

desolation brooch

Usually when I do my beading I like to stick with the two-bead backstitch technique only because in my limited experience they give clean lines and I can cover the whole surface without leaving any gaps with this method. But I find it really hard to do the two-bead backstitch to fill in small spaces so after consulting my beading book  I went with a mixture of picot stitch and lazy stitch to fill the small spaces. As much as I like a picot edge I am not a big fan of the picot stitch. I don’t like the texture it creates (it reminds me of woolly carpets and I was never a fan of those either!!) but it is very effective in filling up small spaces and covering up the backing.

I did a sunshine edge all around so that I could do some edging but when I was done I just didn’t think I needed an edging but the top part felt really heavy and decorated compared to the bottom part of the piece so I ended up adding the dangling part to the bottom to balance the piece out.

Crystal Macrame Bracelet

crystal macrame bracelet

So this is going to be a very quick post!Every summer I go in search of dainty bracelets to wear stacked on top of each other. I love the way some people have an innate ability to mix metals and friendship bracelets and make it look really cool. I for one have never been good at passing that sort of style off but that hasn’t really stopped me from attempting to mix up different bangles and friendship bracelets especially now that I have started making my own stuff.

I started with the simplest of things .a simple bracelet with a macramé knotted sliding closure. The whole purpose behind this bracelet was to learn the macramé knot, which was something I knew nothing about.

crystal macrame bracelet

I chose a beautiful swarovski crystal as my focal point, the thinnest cording I could find and some size 8 seed beads to make this bracelet.

I looped two long pieces of cord around the crystal and then slid on my beads which was believe me the hardest part of the process as the hole inside the bead was not big enough to accommodate the double cord but luckily the beads were not that uniform in size so every so often I could find one with a larger whole that would let both cords get through. I also put a little bit of glue on the ends of the cord so they would be stiffer and act as a needlepoint so that they would slide through easier.

crystal macrame bracelet

When all the beads were strung I started on my macramé knot. The first few times I tried it the knots kept twisting and I couldn’t figure out why but I finally found a great set of instructions online that told me what I was doing wrong and after that the knot proved to be very easy.

To finish it off I cut the extra cord, added a small seed bead to the end of the cord and knotted them and voila the bracelet was done!

Claudia Brooch

Claudia brooch

I have been obsessing somewhat over Lori Earley’s drawings and my mom has been asking me for a while to make a brooch for a friend of hers.

My mom understandably wanted something that suited her friend’s style and personality and to be honest girly, hearts and flowery stuff are not my style. I like skulls and leather and creepy art like Michael Hussar’s drawings and apparently I am the only one around here that appreciates that sort of things cause every time I wear one of my pieces someone comments on how scary they are!! Oh well what can you do.

Out of all the pictures I had printed up for my cabochons “Claudia” was the least cynical and my mom approved of the picture so I started off the beading.

 Claudia brooch

“Claudia” is a graphite on paper sketch so obviously the fact that picture has no colour meant that I didn’t have any colours to try and match my beading to but I wanted to keep the whole thing soft and feminine so I went with the classic silver lined clear beads all the way around the cabochon.

I have to say that a pale cabochon and pale beading did not equal an interesting piece and I didn’t think it would when I was doing it but I was trying to rein myself as much as I could cause this piece wasn’t for me and I tend to go a little crazy with my bead choices sometimes.

Claudia broochClaudia brooch

In the end I can say I really tried to keep it simple but I just couldn’t leave the piece, as it was cause it was just plain boring and Claudia deserved better.

I fished out all the larger beads I had in the black and grey family and stitched them on top of the beading that I had already done. it brought a little bit more contrast to the piece and it made it all the more tactile .

Claudia brooch

I did a simple clean edge around the piece and the piece was finished in no more than a couple of hours!!

Blue Crystal Earrings

blue crystal earring

I love blue!! I mean I luhhhhhhhve blue! I think apart from black blue is the only other colour I am comfortable wearing and working with! I have accumulated a large collection of blue beads, stones and cabs within the past couple of months so I just really wanted to use them and since I have been working on making earrings I set out to make a pair of blue earrings!

blue crystal earring

Following up my theme of not being able to stop myself when choosing beads, I said to hell with it I am going to use any type of bead I want in these. Who knows it might even prove to be interesting.

I had an idea of the cabs I wanted to use in this piece but after that I was clueless. I glued on my first cabochon, which was the lighter blue cab. And this cabochon is OMG beautiful. I can’t describe the colour but to me it’s the perfect blue and it has different hues of blue, navy, silver and green when the light hits it. its just a magnificent piece, too bad that it is one of those vintage pieces that is hard to come by. But I am keeping an eye out for these on my favorite websites.

blue crystal earring

After doing a row of variegated blue seed beads around the cab, I glued on my second cabochon, the small navy blue one with specs of gold.I had specifically bought this piece for another piece I was working on, but this cab came in a pack of four so I had two extra ones to play with and that’s how they ended up here.I decided from early on that instead of the smaller cab being on the top part of the earring I wanted to be on the bottom just so it would be different. I used the same seed beads I had already sewn around the oval cabochon to go around the circle one.

blue crystal earring

It was after this row that I went all crazy. I practically tried on every bead in the blue and silver colour family I owned which I had not previously used on any other piece to see which ones I liked. And because blue is a favorite colour I liked almost all of them. It’s a good thing that I ended up vetoing some because knowing me I would have ended up using them all on this earring.

You can see the beads I ended up choosing in these pictures. But then when it was all done I felt the piece looked too flat and one-dimensional. I had such high hopes for the piece that I felt a little bit disappointed.

blue crystal earring

I went trough my whole stash to see what I could add to salvage this piece. That’s when I ended up using the swarovski marguerites to make the piece more interesting and bring in some different colours. But in the end the way to make anything look better is to add on some swarovski, I mean these crystals to me are like bacon, they just go with anything. I love these earrings now, they are about 5 cm long and the shape reminds me of those Russian nesting dolls or a ladybug for some reason and I think it’s just the cutest little earring ever.So I guess today’s lesson was: when in doubt add crystals!!

blue crystal earring

For some reason I could not get the lighting right for these pictures and I am not sure if these photos to the earrings justice but i really hope you can enjoy them.

An Unfinished Piece

goldstone beading

This past winter when I started doing my bead embroidery, my main aim was to make loads and loads of beaded gloves and sell them on Etsy. The thing was that I started beading in February and we had quite a lukewarm winter this year (which I totally appreciated btw). So I just never got around to making that many gloves except for the ones that I made for family, my friends and me. But I did make a few different shaped patches for gloves, which I never got around to sewing on. These pieces have been hanging around in my unfinished beadwork stash, which isn’t that big of a stash. As I said in my other posts I really don’t like to leave things unfinished!

A couple of days ago when I was sorting through my beadworks I came upon this piece and I started thinking of things to do with them to finish it off. Here is what it looks like at the moment:

goldstone beading

goldstone beading

I used a blue goldstone cabochon and a large faceted rondelle as my focus beads and just went around beading rows around them .for a little bit more interest and sparkle (which is oh so important) I used some hotfix Swarovski crystals as well.

goldstone beading

I made this embroidery specifically to go on gloves so I made a pair. But now since it is summertime and I still have not finished these pieces off I was thinking these could look great as a pair of earrings! They have that hanging shape that earrings have and seem to be of the right length so at this moment that’s the direction I am leaning towards.

I will update this post when the work is completed
